About

This Is Like helps you connect ideas, people, and places through associative thinking. On a deeper level it's a collaborative system of associations: people can add items, link them together, and share their associative knowledge with the others. This way, clusters of similar items are created, which are rated by the number of connections they have. Our site has been called the "Last.Fm of travel" and "Wikipedia of associations", you could also call it the "pop" recommendation system. While our software is based on complex patent-pending algorithms and utilizes several advanced APIs (Calais is one of them), we do not follow the semantic web hype and instead focus on free associative thinking to invite people to share their knowledge and simply play. Technology

ThisIsLike.Com is run on state of the art software created by our team of developers based in Berlin and Moscow. While we're following the Web 2.0 (3.0) hype, we attempted to create something different. You could call it "pop" semantic analysis or diletant recommendation system – shunning away from categorization and rules, letting the free reign of human associative thinking to take over. We're not attempting to compete with the likes of Twine, Google, Wikipedia or numerous recommendation systems.

Our Team

ThisIsLike.Com is directed by its founder, Dmitry Paranyushkin, and is run by a group of like-minded individuals from all over the world. The access is opened to everybody who wishes to contribute and participate in building the network of associations and collaboratively learn from each other.

The resource is mainly interesting for artists, musicians, creative professionals, students, writers, philosophers, and active travelers, who comprise the majority of its user base.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to bridge the gaps created by geographical borders, as well as sociological and cultural discrepancies. It was created as a web platform that allows like-minded individuals and communities connect around their interests, fields of research, and ideas, as well as enhance their interaction and creative practices.

History

ThisIsLike.Com was conceived in May 2007 by Dmitry Paranyushkin in Berlin. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry lived in England, France, India and Germany over the past 7 years. He had always felt a challenge to connect with the new place, find one's community, involve with society in a creative way, and to simply feel at home again.
The project was created to serve all these needs.

The Concept Behind ThisIsLike.Com

ThisIsLike.Com is the associative knowledge network, based on an online user-run database of associations at its core. It fuses the features of social networking systems and recommendation engines taking an innovative approach.

Using the network, members can discover and connect to people, places, and things that are similar to each other around the globe. They can also collaboratively learn by adding and linking new items, thus jointly expanding the web of associations and building clusters of inter-related items online.
